The Brief: Lets Go Punting

With smartphones packing, even more, features these days, one of the very best features still for us is the ability to use “Geolocation” services. The features to be able to get your location latitude and Longitude coordinates direction and speed proved very useful in our most recent project. Cambridge Tours approached us last September with a brief to provide an App for their River tours to support their increasing number of tourists from China. The app required would be able to be put into three languages, English, Mandarin and Cantonese, and be able to provide an audio recording of different places along the tour. The added layer of using GPS to trigger the audio was essential, and the app could also be used manually if your phone did not have GPS or you simply preferred to listen at your own pace.

We spent two weeks mapping the coordinated on the river with a simple mapping tool that allowed us to find the best way to make sure we triggered the audio within the right geofence area and that the user was notified of the audio being ready at that point of interest.

Live testing was essential on the boat with the phone picking up a GPS signal and the timings logged at each point in order to refine the application, it was important to test on a range of handsets as well as weather conditions.

The challenge was making sure the points on the river were triggered only once when heading down the river, and then a different set on the way back. This brought its own challenges that our team were able to solve with heading reference to get the correct locations more accurately when using built-in APIs on the Android and Apple platforms.
